George Lerner (1922 – 1995) was the creator of Mr. Potato Head.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Lerner was a multitalented person who worked as an artist, graphic designer and model maker.
He initially came up with the idea of turning food into toys in 1949. The idea did not go over well at first because post-World War II consumers did not like the idea of wasting perfectly good food. When the Hasbro toy company introduced Mr. Potato Head to American Consumers in 1952, the world embraced the idea and the company sold more than one million sets the first year.
In 1964 and 1975, Lerner's original designs got their plastic head and size upgrades in order to comply with government issued safety regulations.
In 1995, Lerner died at age 73.
